Choosing the right size is about more than the number on the label. The cut of the design, the amount of ease and the stretch of the fabric all influence how a garment will fit.
This guide will help you find your reference size, take your measurements accurately and understand the sizing information shown on MALAM product pages.
For an in-stock garment, always check the recommended body measurements on its product page first.
Recommended body measurements or garment measurements?
Recommended body measurements
Recommended body measurements refer to your own measurements: bust, waist, hips, and so on.
They show the range of body measurements the garment is designed to fit.
Garment measurements
Garment measurements refer to the actual item itself: total length, sleeve length, inseam, width, or another measurement specific to the design.
These two types of measurements are not directly comparable. For example, a garment designed for a 90 cm bust will usually measure more than 90 cm around the chest to allow for ease and comfortable movement.
How to take your measurements
Use a soft measuring tape and keep it comfortably close to the body without pulling it tight. Do not add ease yourself. Ideally, take your measurements over underwear or very lightweight clothing.
General size chart
Use this chart as a general guide to your French size.
| French size | UK equiv. | Bust | Waist |
|---|---|---|---|
| 34 | 6 | 78-82 cm | 66-70 cm |
| 36 | 8 | 82-86 cm | 70-74 cm |
| 38 | 10 | 86-90 cm | 74-78 cm |
| 40 | 12 | 90-94 cm | 78-82 cm |
| 42 | 14 | 94-98 cm | 82-86 cm |
| 44 | 16 | 98-102 cm | 86-90 cm |
| 46 | 18 | 102-106 cm | 90-94 cm |
Use this chart as a general sizing guide. Depending on the cut and fabric, a particular garment may suit a slightly different range of body measurements.
Trouser size chart
Most MALAM trousers are sized XS, S, M, L or XL.
| Size | Waist | Max. hips |
|---|---|---|
| XS | 72–82 cm | 100 cm |
| S | 76–86 cm | 106 cm |
| M | 80–90 cm | 116 cm |
| L | 84–96 cm | 122 cm |
| XL | 88–102 cm | 126 cm |
The waist ranges overlap because the waistband is elasticated. If you are between two sizes, use your hip measurement as the main guide.
For trousers already in stock, always check the recommended body measurements on the product page.
How to take your measurements
Bust
Measure horizontally around the fullest part of your bust without pulling the tape tight.
Waist
Measure around the narrowest part of your waist, usually just above the navel, without pulling the tape tight.
Hips
Measure horizontally around the fullest part of your hips and bottom.
Upper arm
Measure around the fullest part of your upper arm when this measurement is relevant to the design.
Inseam
Measure from the crotch down the inside of the leg to the desired length.
Between two sizes?
If your measurements fall between two sizes, check the product page for the design you are interested in before deciding.
Depending on the cut, ease and fabric, the same design may work for a range of body shapes.
For made-to-order pieces, certain measurements may also be adjusted depending on the design.
Shorter or taller?
Garment length also depends on your height and on how you prefer to wear the piece.
Depending on the design, some lengths can be adjusted when you order. The actual measurements of an in-stock garment are shown on its product page.
Example: From around 1.65 m tall, this design is worn as a cropped trouser; it can also be shortened on request.
Personalised or made to measure?
A personalised design lets you choose from the fabrics, colours and options available for that model.
Made to measure is about adapting the garment more closely to your own measurements.
If you are not sure which option is best for you, feel free to contact me before ordering.

Frequently asked questions about sizes and measurements
How do I choose my MALAM size?
Use the size chart as a general guide. For an in-stock garment, check the recommended body measurements on its product page first.
What is the difference between recommended body measurements and garment measurements?
Recommended body measurements refer to your own measurements. Garment measurements refer to the actual piece itself, for example its total length, sleeve length or inseam.
Why can the measurements on a product page differ from the general size chart?
The size chart is only a general guide. The cut, ease and fabric stretch can all affect the range of body measurements a particular garment will suit.
What if I am between two sizes?
